History of the Isleworth War Memorial

The Grade II listed war memorial in Isleworth, in the London Borough of Hounslow, is a large square Clipsham limestone clock tower topped with a wheel cross. There are clock faces with black Roman numerals at the top of all four elevations of the memorial. On one elevation a sword and wreath is carved in relief. On the lower half of the clocktower is a stringcourse and frieze decorated with the words ‘Isleworth Remembrance’ in relief Gothic script. Below this on three sides are Portland stone inscription panels listing the names of those who fell in World War I. On the fourth side is a wooden door. The World War I dedication is inscribed into the base and the World War II dedication has been added on an angled panel on the steps below. The memorial stands on steps made of York stone in the Memorial Square, at the junction of South Street and Twickenham Road.

In June 2001 this memorial received a grant of £5,000 from English Heritage. The grant covered four main areas of work. The limestone clock tower was inspected, weathered joints re-pointed and two portions of the moulding repaired with lime-based mortar. Two of the inscribed Portland stone panels on the memorial which had decayed beyond repair were replaced and the other four re-cut; the lettering on all was painted or re-painted. The York stone steps were re-faced and lime mortar used to bed the new facings.

The memorial was designed by Mr A P Green and built by Messrs Keates and Co of Hampton.
